“Who is this Tool?” isn’t something we’d expect to hear at all — and yet here we are. In possibly the oddest feud in the history of music since Billboard came into being, we have Tool versus Taylor Swift.
You read that right. One of the most legendary rock and metal acts in history is duking it out with someone known for hits such as We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and Love Story.
Taylor Swift is Back with ‘Lover’
Back in 2017, Taylor Swift shocked the world with her new image for Reputation. Before that, we saw her as this sweet country and pop singer. This time, she had a rebellious vibe that got everyone talking.
Reputation sold a million copies in its first week, as expected. But could the 29-year-old continue her winning streak? Fast forward two years and we now have Lover, which is somewhat a return to form.
The first week alone proved that Lover was a smashing success but it didn’t exceed a million sales. Still, selling 867,000 units in such a short span was insane. Each song in the album got into the Billboard 100.
With all the momentum going for Taylor Swift and her latest album, it seemed like there was nothing that could stop it. Everyone pretty much expected Lover to dominate the charts in its second week.
Then Tool Came Along With A Vengeance
This wasn’t a typical year for music. While pop and rap dominated the airwaves, there was a feeling that something huge was coming back — and that was Tool. For Swifties, they had no idea what was coming.
After 13 years, Tool decided to come together and make another album. They didn’t have to do any more music, but they still had it in them. Plus, their fans have been waiting for so long.
Tool’s previous album was 10,000 Days, which entered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with sales of over 500,000 units. Based on their sales history, it was clear that Tool could pull off an upset over Taylor Swift.
The band had a great plan. First, they got the attention of their old fans through the release of their entire discography on streaming platforms. This enabled everyone to listen to Tool before Fear Inoculum.
Topping the Charts With ‘Fear Inoculum’
Look, Taylor Swift and her fans should be celebrating already with her massive first-week sales. But Swifties are passionate and they want their queen to reign over far longer than seven days.
During Lover’s second week, the Swifties noticed something: Tool was catching up fast. It then reached a point that Fear Inoculum overtook Lover on iTunes. This sent Swifties in a panic on social media.

Some of them read a little about Tool and learned that they’ve been inactive for 13 years. Others, understandably, just didn’t want Lover to lose to a supposedly unknown act.

But the long wait for a new Tool album was too much for even one of the biggest fanbases in the world to beat. Fear Inoculum entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 after selling 270,000 units.
Tool means no harm to either Swift or her fans, however. Frontman Maynard Keenan even posted a funny image of him as Thanos as he turns the pop star to dust. In his tweet, he tells people to lighten up.
